families till gradually the new method meets with general approval and the trains fill up.

24. A reference to the table given above will show how this development has taken place. Taking the Receipts of the wook xxx ending 14th October due to the Brirish Sec- tion as rib.24 Inwards and feb6 Outwards and the receipts of the week ending October 28th as being the week unin- fluenced by the exodus from Canton as being 1759.25 Inwards and $1,257 Outwards, we arrive at the conclusion that in a fortnight the Traffic hau increased 75% in the case of the Inwards and 50% in the case of Outwards. It is only reasonable and fair that the exceptional conuitions unger which the stoppage occurred should be taken into account in arriving at the compensation due by the Chinese Govern- ment. Even if traffic wore to be resumed at unce it will be some time before the position arrived at, at time of closing can be regained, and the stoppage will adversely affect the receipts at the time when the Railway has to gain as much as possible in order to put by for the rainy day which comes in May and goes on to the end of August

and the consequent bad times.

25.

Assuming then that under normal conditions the re- coipts would have gone up 50% per fortnight that is 20%

per week average for the rest of the time, no unfair assumption during the month of November. We arrive at the following figures which for easy reference I take in
